Filming has officially started on the much-anticipated Supergirl movie, and director James Gunn has unveiled the first glimpse of Milly Alcock in the iconic role of Kara Zor-El.
Taking to social media, Gunn expressed his excitement:
“Thrilled to see cameras roll at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden on Supergirl, with Craig Gillespie at the helm and the phenomenal Milly Alcock as our Kara Zor-El. Craig brings an incredible sensibility to this story, and Milly is every inch the unique #Supergirl envisioned by Tom King, Bilquis Evely & Ana Nogueira.”
A Story Inspired by Acclaimed Comics
The movie is based on Tom King’s 2022 comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, illustrated by Bilquis Evely. The storyline follows Kara Zor-El as she teams up with Ruthye Mary Knolle, a warrior seeking justice for her father, who was murdered by Krem of the Yellow Hill. Together, they embark on an intergalactic journey to bring Krem to justice.
Eve Ridley, known for Three Body Problem, will portray Ruthye Mary Knolle, while Matthias Schoenaerts (Rust and Bone) takes on the role of the villainous Krem.

Milly Alcock as Gunn’s First Choice
Milly Alcock, widely recognized for her role in House of the Dragon, will play Supergirl. Gunn revealed that Alcock was his very first pick for the role:
“Strangely, Milly was the FIRST person I brought up to Peter (Safran) for this role, well over a year ago, when I had only read the comics,” Gunn shared on Threads.
Behind the Camera
The film is directed by Craig Gillespie (Cruella), with a screenplay by Ana Nogueira. Gunn’s DC Studios is adapting this beloved story as part of its new universe, promising a fresh and unique take on the superhero genre.
With Alcock leading the cast and a visionary team behind the scenes, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is shaping up to be a must-watch film for fans of DC Comics and beyond.
Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting project!
